The Paragon of Japanese Whisky Hibiki, meaning “resonance” in Japanese, speaks to the soul and emotions of the most discerning whisky lovers. Introduced in 1989 to commemorate Suntory’s 90th anniversary, the Hibiki 17 Years Old is the original expression that set the benchmark for premium blended Japanese whisky. Its global fame was cemented not only by its flawless quality but also by its iconic appearance in the movie Lost in Translation.
The Art of the Blend This expression is a meticulous blend of malt and grain whiskies from Suntory’s Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries. The whisky is aged in a variety of casks, including rare Japanese Mizunara oak, which imparts a unique, fragrant incense-like quality. The bottle itself is a work of art, featuring 24 facets that represent the 24 seasons of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar, reflecting the passage of time and nature’s influence on the maturation process.
Official Tasting Notes

-
Finish: Long, sweet, and fruity with a delicate, lingering lychee aftertaste.
An Unrivaled Collector’s Item Due to the massive global shortage of aged Japanese whisky, Suntory officially suspended the production of Hibiki 17 in 2018. Since then, it has become a “holy grail” bottle for collectors and investors. Finding a bottle in South Africa is exceptionally rare. At R17,500.00, this is an opportunity to own a piece of whisky history that continues to appreciate in value.
